TRAILER SERVICE CHECK LIST

With warm weather and spring returning most of us have neglected our trailers through the winter months or used them all winter.  Trailers like your other vehicles need regular maintenance if you want them to function and perform when you need them.  There are some recommended inspections that should be done before you hook up that trailer for even a short trip.  Most of these inspections are very easy and should be done before every trip.

Follow this short checklist:

Correct air pressure in your tires including your spare

Tires inspected for weather cracks or lack of tread

            Missing lug nuts on wheels

Condition of electrical trailer and tow vehicle plug

            Function of all lighting

            Cracked or missing lighting/lenses

Door or gates/latches fastened and secured

Trailer load correctly balanced and loose items stowed

Safety chains/cables secure and in good condition

Electric break-a-way cable connected if equipped

Additionally there are also things that should be inspected by a qualified technician; not every trip, but on a regular or yearly basis.

These yearly inspections include all of the things that are inspected on the short checklist, but go into greater depth to include removing the tires and wheels and digging further than what is easily seen by just a quick visual check.

Yearly inspections should include:

            Wiring inspection for function

Broken, loose or potential wiring problems

Wiring inspection for wear, rot, shorts or chafing

Electric brake components including electric break-a-way

Adjusting the electric components brakes for correct braking

            Wheel bearings/races and seals

Missing or leaking bearing dust covers

            Structural/Flooring supports

            Floor condition and material wear/rot/moisture

            Window/Door/Roof seals

Roof vents condition, function, leaks, seals etc.

Mechanical condition of the tongue jack

            Door stays and hinge function

Cosmetic finish, like paint or oxidization of aluminum

Most trailer savvy owners schedule  and maintain their trailers with a yearly inspection and service to make sure their trailer is in top shape and won’t cause any delays once on the road.
